General Information
General Information
Communication – Open lines of communication are essential for educational success! Please feel free to email me at any time with questions, comments, or concerns at [email protected]. If you need to send something with your child in writing, such as a transportation change or a check, please send it in your student’s daily folder. Likewise, if there is something essential that I need to send to you, such as field trip forms, report cards, or forms to be signed, I will send it home in the daily folder.
*Instructional time is valued as priority. There may be times where I am unable to respond to emails immediately because I will be busy having fun teaching! I will get back to you as soon as possible when it will not interfere with any meetings or teaching time. Please give me a reasonable amount of time to respond to emails. If there is anything urgent or an emergency, please put URGENT in the subject line.
“Info to go” Folder – Every student will have a red folder that is expected to stay in their binders. It will include take home papers, school papers, notices, and any other important school information. Please make sure to check your child’s folder each night it comes home.
Weekly Update – Communication between school and home is very important. I will send e-mails with important details and upcoming events every Friday.
Morning Procedures-
Arrival time takes place between 8:15am-8:40am. Parents are not allowed to walk their child back after 8:30am. You are more than welcomed to walk your child to the classroom door. Students need to be able to enter the classroom independently to put their belongings away and get started on their morning work. Please save any questions for the teacher via e-mail to lessen class disruptions.
Homework- Weekly homework packets are sent home every Monday and are due Friday. The homework packet will be placed in your child’s binder. Please help your child with homework each night and space it out throughout the week so that your child isn’t overwhelmed. The purpose of homework is to practice skills learned and build responsibility. A homework punch card will be placed in your child’s binder. For every five punches, your child will receive a reward. Lost punch cards will not be replaced. Students are responsible for their own cards. Graded homework will only be sent home upon request.
Grades- Kindergarten grades are slightly different than other grade levels. Our report card will be in 4 cycles and it is standards based for Reading and Math. A number system 1-4 is used for the report card. All classwork is used to practice skills being learned. More information will be provided as the end of the grading period comes closer.
Sight Word Stars- Kindergarten will be administering a sight word incentive called “Sight Word Stars!” The sight words are divided into lists according to the order they will be taught throughout the school year. Please work on one list at a time with your child. Your child we be assessed on the sight words twice a month. If a student masters a list, they will earn a certificate and reward. The rewards will change each month. Once your child has mastered the first 7 lists, they earn lunch with the teacher. Once your child has mastered all 13 lists, they earn lunch with the principal! The first assessment of List 1 will be the middle of September (students will only be assessed once this month), date to be decided. You can find the Sight Word lists in this folder.
Field Trips- Field trips are a great learning opportunity, but are also a privilege. All students must continue to meet classroom behavior expectations before, during, and after field trips. If a student is not meeting behavior expectations, the teacher has authority to decline field trip privileges. We welcome parents on field trips, but you must be Level 2 screened. Younger siblings must stay at home if you are chaperoning a field trip. Weekly e-mails and the red folder will have more specific information on upcoming field trips.
Volunteer Opportunities- If you would like to volunteer on field trips, you must be on Level 2 Status for necessary clearance. We can always use volunteers during lunch periods and field trips. Please be on the lookout for other volunteer opportunities via email throughout the year.
Birthdays – I am a true believer that birthdays are very special days! If you have a special snack or treat for your student on their special day, please feel free to bring them in. Please give me at least a 24 hour notice if you plan on bringing in a special treat so I can arrange our schedule accordingly.
Snack – We will have a morning snack and afternoon snack each day in our class. Please provide two small healthy snacks for your child daily that will easily fit in a zip lock bag. Please keep in mind that snack time is 5-10 minutes long. Students need to have access to a snack they can eat quickly and will make minimal mess. Teachers are unable to provide snacks and silverware.
* Candy is not allowed at school unless provided by the teacher.
*Cakes, cookies, brownies, cupcakes, etc. should be limited to birthdays and holiday celebrations.
Lunch- School Lunch will be provided to all students upon request. If you would like your child to get school lunch, please set up an online account. Students are held accountable for speaking up and letting the teacher know they need a school lunch (even if they receive free lunch every day). School lunch is unable to be ordered after 9:00am. If your child does not tell the teacher they need a school lunch, the front office will notify parents via phone call and parents will need to bring in a lunch for their child to eat. Extra lunches are not ordered. This information can be found on our website. Lunch from home should be ready to eat upon arrival. Ovens and microwaves are not provided. Family members are welcome to come and eat lunch with students. We appreciate your understanding with our limited space and ask that all students return to class on time. Lunch is from 11:00-11:25.
Water Bottles- Research has shown children learn better when they are properly hydrated. We encourage your child to bring a water bottle for the classroom. Please make sure to write your child’s name on his or her water bottle that can be easily seen. Every Friday I will have the students pack up their water bottles to be washed and cleaned at home. It is important that your child brings his/her water bottle clean and filled by the following Monday. Please fill your child’s water bottle only with water. The students will have opportunities throughout the day to refill their water bottles if needed. Thank you for your help!
Bathroom procedures for accidents- Your child will have opportunities throughout the day to use the restroom. Students are asked not to use the restroom during instructional time, but may sign out to use the restroom before and after. Sometimes accidents will happen. Please provide a spare set of clothes in your child’s backpack (including underwear). Please have your child’s spare set of clothes in a bag with his or her name labeled clearly on the front.
Uniform Compliance- You have probably heard the motto, “Dress for Success!” J Here at Plato Academy, the children are required to follow a set dress code. If your child is not in uniform compliance, they will receive a Dress Code Violation Letter. Light up shoes, boots, and sandals are prohibited. Please see the Parent/Student handbook or additional dress code guidelines.
